Bucaramanga June 2022. The International Hospital of Colombia was certified as one of the best Latin American centers in the management of cerebrovascular attacks (CVA) by the World Stroke Organization (WSO) and the Ibero-American Society of Cerebrovascular Diseases (SIECV). This award was granted in conjunction with centers in countries such as Brazil and Uruguay.
The scientific director of the Neurological Institute at the HIC, Dr. Federico Silva Sieger, assures this recognition "is proof that the services provided by the International Hospital of Colombia to patients who suffer from cerebrovascular attacks accomplish the highest international standards and are equal to first level centers in the world."
To obtain this certification was necessary to fulfill requirements including staff training, education, investment in equipment, infrastructure, and other essential efforts by the team of professionals, as explained by Dr. Tony Álvarez Guzmán, leader of the ACV Center of Excellence.
Currently, the Neurological Institute has received other world-class recognitions, such as the WSO Angels Awards Gold Seal and certification by the Joint Commission International.
Stroke Preventive Measures
According to data by the World Health Organization (WHO), stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. In Colombia, the latest Dane report shows that during 2022 there have been 1,657 deaths caused by this disease; of this total, 809 occurred in men and 848 in women.
In this regard, the scientific director of the Neurological Institute assures that about 400 people a year attend the HIC for stroke, and the prognosis improves significantly if medical help is sought quickly. It is essential to identify the symptoms that could end in one of these attacks. These may involve difficulty speaking and understanding others, headache, trouble walking, or numbness of the face, arm, or leg. If these signs are present, it is urgent to attend specialized hospitals in managing this condition.
In addition, according to Silva Sieger, it is crucial to prevent these attacks by avoiding unhealthy habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Frequent physical activity is also essential to protect health.
